Day 87 of 138 on our world cruise and we officially reached Africa. More specifically, the smallest country of Africa, with the world’s smallest capital city, Victoria, that hosts many of the rich and famous on several of its archipelagos sprinkled in the Indian Ocean. The Island Country is Seychelles, which welcomes you with greenery on the mountainsides, and white sandy beaches and crystalline waters.
We opted to take the Viking included excursion which began with a van ride over the mountain from Victoria to the lovely Beau Vallon Beach resort. The excursion was 4 hours to relax on the beach enjoy a drink of choice and swim, snorkel, or rent jet skis. Perfect for a day to relax and soak in some sun.
The surprise of the trip however, was the resort had a small reserve of island tortoises in front of the entry. The huge tortoises were very friendly and liked a scratch on the head and chin.
The challenge today however is that it was Sunday and in a country primarily catholic, Sunday is a holy day of rest and many stores were not open so, walking the city (which is very small anyway) was fruitless. However, by the port, there were a few temporary stalls of vendors selling some souvenirs and local textiles.
We were shown out in the distance a small island way off the north coast which was the honeymoon island for the future King and Queen of England William and Kate and you could understand why it was chosen, very secluded and thus offering the highest level of privacy one can get (Gina surmised, William learned that from his mom)
Anyway the trip back to Victoria was around the coast in which these big gigantic Boulders sprinkle the landscape and shore – remarkable and photogenic.
Seychelles is beautiful and we pray that the island can remain as vibrant, financially sound and beautiful as it is today – however, politics always can be a disruptor and maintaining its environment, avoid overcrowding and keeping crime low is just some of the challenges the island will face.
