Not far from Porto Portugal, you can get to Vigo, Spain a beautiful city with lots of history. Known for being Spain’s gateway to the Atlantic, it’s history goes back to the romans. The port was used as a trading post between the Vikings and Romans. Being so important however drew lots of raids and occupations by French and the Turkish. It is one of the largest cities in Galica Spain located in the northwest corner of the Spain.
We arose early and walked the nearby section of the city by the port – it had gorgeous historical buildings built on the hillside and narrow walking streets that you could not anticipate the next beautiful site was just around the corner. The streets we walked on were very pedestrian friendly with stores and markets that were pleasing to the eye. We understand that “Zara” the clothing store brand was founded in Vigo and is a worldwide brand.
In the afternoon, we took the included coach tour of the city which went to Castro Park allowed us access to the original old town on the top of the hill overlooking the bay and walls that protected the town. After that, we went to a palace owned by a duke that had beautiful gardens that were displaying beautiful flowers – unfortunately we had to rush through the garden since it started to rain! The Palace also had a section of roman materials found on the site that were on display. We did get a chance to drive around the city to see the sites from the coach but the rain put a damper on getting good photos.
